BPYHA Pony Program Description Our goals: to have fun and to provide the best instruction possible Team Formation Pony teams will be formed based on the following criteria:
The main goal in team formation, after each team has a coach and siblings are put on the same team, is to balance the amount of skill and experience on each team. This provides for the most enjoyable and productive game experiences once games begin in December or January. It also ensures that every team will have experienced skaters to provide roll models and examples for the beginners. Skating Ability Each player will develop skating skills at his or her own pace. At the beginning of the season each player will be evaluated and placed into a group of skaters with similar abilities. Every player’s helmet will be marked with a piece of colored tape indicating a general skill group. Practices will be planned to challenge each of the skill groups separately. While the groups will advance together to learn new skills as the season progresses, if there is a case where a player is not being challenged or is being over-challenged they can be moved to a different skill group. These cases will be handled one by one by the parents and coaches.Equipment Equipment plays a vital role in your child’s hockey development. You do not need to have the best equipment, but a modern pair of skates that fit correctly and other recent models of protective equipment will be very beneficial for your child and should be considered essential. Please read the equipment information memo to parents for further details. Games Games will begin in late December or early January. Games provide fun and learning to all kids but are at this level are considered secondary to practice sessions. The game format is described in a separate memo to parents that will be distributed when games begin.
